A FOUNDING NOTE

How Northern Lights found its voice in the ring between silence and song

There’s a moment before the first downbeat when the room seems to listen back—a soft, expectant stillness that belongs to handbells alone. Northern Lights Handbell Ensemble began in that quiet: a small circle of players, a borrowed table, and a shared desire to let melody and light travel through metal and air. We weren’t chasing volume or spectacle. We were chasing clarity—notes that bloom, disappear, and somehow leave the space warmer than they found it.

From the start, our rehearsals have been equal parts discipline and delight. Handbells demand teamwork in the most literal way: one musical line spread across many hands, every entrance dependent on everyone else. We learned to breathe together, to count with honesty, to listen for balance as carefully as we listen for pitch. Over time, that practice became our sound—precise, expressive, and shaped by the joy of making something single from many parts.

Our repertoire has grown from seasonal favorites to a broad mix of classical transcriptions, hymn settings, contemporary works, and collaborations that keep us curious. We love the shimmer of a well-placed chord, the athleticism of quick passages, and the storytelling that can happen without a single word. Whether we’re playing in a church sanctuary, a concert hall, or a community venue, our goal is the same: to offer music that feels crafted, welcoming, and memorable.

If you’re reading this as a listener, thank you for bringing your attention—the rarest gift—to live performance. And if you’re reading as a presenter or planner, know that we care deeply about preparation, pacing, and the full experience of an event. We’d be honored to share our music with your community and to help shape a program that fits the moment.

Until we meet in the next quiet before the first note—thank you for listening.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Elena North Jensen

Founder & Artistic Director · Est. 2012

Elena North Jensen founded Northern Lights Handbell Ensemble to bring concert-level handbell artistry to community stages and sacred spaces alike. Trained as both a ringer and conductor, she shapes programs that pair crystalline technique with warm storytelling—mixing classics, contemporary works, and seasonal favorites. Her rehearsals focus on musical line, precise articulation, and the collaborative listening that makes bells shimmer as one instrument. Under her direction, Northern Lights has become a trusted partner for presenters seeking a polished ensemble, thoughtful repertoire, and a performance experience that feels both inspiring and welcoming.

“When the whole room hears a single chord bloom and fade together, you realize bells can sing like a choir—only brighter.”
